Hello,After just finishing this season trying to mow my 30+ acres of hilly fields with a 27HP yanmar with a 60" belly mower, I have decided I need a better solution. I am killing my machine 'cause a finish mower really doesn't like the uneven terrain or all of the rocks, and the 60 inches doesn't cut enough of it at a time so that I can keep the fields down most of the time (it takes approx 15-20 to cut the whole place, can't do that every week). I am buying a much bigger tractor (JD 5510 most likely) but not sure what the best mowing attachment should be. I am leaning towards a 7 or 8 foot rotary cutter (or even bigger if I can get a good deal on a new/used one). Question: would a flail mower be more appropriate? and which mower flail or rotary does a better job in having the resultant field looking more like lawn and less like pasture? My eventual goal is to gradually turn more and more of the "fields" into lawn so that they can be finished mowed, but that will take some time..Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Jd5510 or kubota m8200 would both pull a batwing style mower in the 12' plus range giving you the ability to mow 8 plus acres an hour. They normally will mow up to 4.5" tall which would cover your (rocks)hopefully. When you get more land cleared better you could let the wheels down and get a perfect lawn. Flail mowers require a lot of horsepower and you would not be cutting your time but in half at best. ....

Have you ever thought about adding a couple high quality tow behind wing mowers onto your present system. This would allow you to go from 60" cutting width up to 14 feet and then drop off one or two to get back to Yanmar 60" mower for narrow areas. This would cut your mowing time down to about 5 hours. That is a considerable time savings for the cost. These tow mowers will also give you a high quality finish cut at speeds in excess of 6 mph. The wing mowers also give you the capability of winging down steep banks and under low branch trees. Come check us out at www.kunzeng.com or give us a call at (815) 539-6954. ....
